For example, Wishard's survival rates for burn and trauma victims and babies needing highly specialized neonatal care place Wishard in the top five of the more than 200 hospitals nationwide affiliated with universities, as reported by the University HealthSystem Consortium.

The statistics speak for themselves. For the most critical of quality measures - survival rate - Wishard not only exceeds the national benchmark in cardiology, gastroenterology, medical oncology, general medicine, neurology and general surgery, survival rates further improved in all but one of these critical care areas from 2007 to 2008.

Wishard is able to ensure better outcomes for its patients in part through its commitment to quality indicators - best practices and protocol for patient care across a range of common conditions, including acute myocardial infarction, heart failure, pneumonia and post-surgical infection. Through steps ranging from administration of appropriate medications, treatments, diagnostic tests or education, a patient's survival rate is improved, complications are reduced and quality of life is improved.

Wishard's commitment to quality is also evidenced by its innovations in medical recordkeeping. More than 25 years ago, Wishard - in conjunction with the Regenstrief Institute - created and implemented the nation's first electronic medical records system. This initiative pioneered numerous advances that improve quality of care and lower cost through health information technology.
